How to Use This Printable
- Set a per-trip or weekly grocery budget at the top.
- Log the store and planned budget before you shop.
- Fill in the actual total once you check out.
- Compare Budgeted vs. Actual to catch creep early.
Setting a realistic grocery number
Start from your actual grocery and household spending over the last two or three months, not a figure from an article. Divide by the number of people in the household to get a per-person number you can sanity-check. Keep groceries and dining out on separate lines, since mixing them hides the real cost of eating at home.
How to use the planner each week
Write your planned shop amount at the start of the week, log every trip including quick top-ups, and keep a running total. Small mid-week trips are where grocery budgets slip, so record them the same way you record a big weekly shop.
Bringing the number down
Plan meals around what is already in the cupboard, shop with a list built from that plan, and check the running total before any unplanned trip. For typical ranges by household size, see the guide on grocery budgets by household size.

FAQ
- Is this a grocery list?
- No, it tracks spending per trip rather than individual items. Use your own list alongside it.
- How many trips fit on one sheet?
- 12 rows, enough for about a month of typical grocery trips.
- Should household supplies count as groceries?
- That's your call. Some people fold in household basics bought at the same store, others track them separately.
- How do I set the Budgeted number to start?
- Look at your last two or three months of grocery receipts and use the average as a starting point.
- What if one trip is way over budget?
- Note why in the margin. A holiday or bulk-stock trip is different from a pattern worth fixing.
