How to Use This Printable
- Log each payment as it arrives: date, client or source, description, amount.
- Mark whether it's been received (Paid column).
- Total the Amount column at the end of the month.
- Keep completed sheets together for tax season.
Why freelance income needs its own log
Freelance or side hustle money rarely arrives on a fixed schedule the way a paycheck does, and it is easy to lose track of who paid what and when once a few clients are involved. Logging every payment as it lands, rather than reconstructing it later from bank statements, keeps a clean record for both budgeting and taxes.
Using the Paid column
Not every invoice gets paid right away, so the Paid column separates money that has actually landed from money that is still owed. Reviewing the unpaid rows every week or two is the easiest way to catch a late invoice before it is forgotten.
Turning the log into a budget
Once a few months are logged, total the Amount column to see a realistic monthly average rather than budgeting off your best month. Pair that number with the Monthly Budget Planner or the Irregular Income Budget Planner if freelance income covers only part of your monthly total.
Ideas for Using This Printable
- Use a separate sheet per month or per client, whichever is easier to reconcile.
- Pair with the Monthly Budget Planner if freelance income covers part of your budget.
- Note which payments still need an invoice sent.

FAQ
- Does this handle taxes?
- No, it's just an income log. Keep it alongside your actual tax records or hand it to a tax preparer as a summary.
- How many entries fit per sheet?
- 20 rows, enough for most months of freelance or side hustle income.
- Do I need to log expenses too?
- This sheet is for income only; pair it with the Small Business Expense Tracker for the expense side if you need both.
- What if a client pays in a currency other than my own?
- Convert to your own currency at the rate on the day of payment, and note the original amount in the Description column if you need to reference it later.
- Should I separate income by client or keep it all on one sheet?
- One sheet works for most freelancers; switch to a sheet per client only if you have several large ongoing clients and want separate totals.
