52-Week Challenge Calculator: Totals for Any Starting Amount

Work out the 52-week money challenge for any starting amount: yearly totals for $0.50 to $10, running totals by quarter, and how to reverse-engineer a savings goal.

The classic 52-week money challenge starts at $1 and adds $1 every week, for $1,378 by the end of the year. But the $1 is just a starting point. Change it and the whole challenge scales with it, and the math is simple enough to do on a napkin.

The one number to remember: 1,378

Whatever you save in week 1, you save twice that in week 2, three times in week 3, and 52 times in week 52. Add up 1 through 52 and you get 1,378. So:

Yearly total = your week 1 amount × 1,378

Totals for common starting amounts

Week 1 amount Week 52 amount Yearly total
$0.50 $26 $689
$1 (classic) $52 $1,378
$2 $104 $2,756
$5 $260 $6,890
$10 $520 $13,780

Anything above $2 a week gets steep fast. At $5, the last week alone is $260, so the bigger versions tend to work better in reverse, starting with the largest deposit.

Working backward from a goal

If you have a target in mind, divide it by 1,378 to get your week 1 amount, then round to something easy to count. Rounding to the nearest quarter keeps the math clean:

Goal Week 1 amount Week 52 amount Actual total
About $1,000 $0.75 $39 $1,033.50
About $2,000 $1.50 $78 $2,067
About $3,000 $2.25 $117 $3,100.50
About $5,000 $3.75 $195 $5,167.50

If you'd rather hit your goal to the dollar, the savings challenge generator does this for you. Pick the increasing pattern, enter your goal and 52 weeks, and it builds a week-by-week schedule that adds up to the exact amount.

Where the money actually lands

The classic version is back-loaded. Here is how far along you are at each quarter of the year with the $1 start:

After week Saved so far Share of the total
13 $91 7%
26 $351 25%
39 $780 57%
52 $1,378 100%

Three quarters of the money comes in the second half of the year, and weeks 40 to 52 alone make up $598. That is why the challenge often stalls around the holidays. Run it in reverse and the numbers flip: you have $1,027 saved by the end of June, and the last quarter only asks for $91.

The biweekly version

Paid every two weeks? Combine two weeks into each deposit. Paycheck 1 covers weeks 1 and 2 ($3), paycheck 2 covers weeks 3 and 4 ($7), and each deposit is $4 more than the last, up to $103 on the 26th paycheck. It adds up to the same $1,378. Multiply by your week 1 amount to scale it the same way as the weekly version.
