How to Use This Printable
- List each envelope category you use.
- Fill in the starting amount when you fund the envelope.
- Log spending as it happens.
- Update Remaining after each purchase, or at the end of the week.
Why cash slows spending down
Handing over physical notes registers more than tapping a card, so for many people the categories they always overshoot come back under control once the money is cash in an envelope.
Which categories to use it for
Use envelopes for the areas that leak: groceries, eating out, entertainment, personal spending. Leave fixed bills like rent and insurance on autopay. Trying to run everything in cash is what makes people give up.
The no-cash version
If carrying cash is not practical, keep the same limits on paper. Write each category's budget on the tracker, subtract every purchase as it happens, and stop spending that category when the line reaches zero.

FAQ
- How many envelopes fit on one sheet?
- 8 rows, with 2 blank rows for categories not already listed.
- Does this replace actual cash envelopes?
- No, it's a log to go alongside them (or a digital version of the same method) so you have a written record.
- What if an envelope runs out mid-period?
- Either hold off on spending in that category until the next period, or transfer leftover cash from another envelope and note the move.
- Can I track a joint cash system with a partner?
- Yes, use one sheet for shared envelopes and note who spent what in the Spent column if that matters to you.
- Does leftover cash roll over?
- That's your call. Some people roll it into next period's starting amount, others reset every envelope to the same figure.
